Top 10 most downloaded software in the last 10 years
by admin on Jun.15, 2009, under Science and Tech
When CNET Download.com opened its doors in 1996, it was home to 3,000 small shareware and freeware applications. Online software distribution was still in its infancy. What a difference a near-decade makes! Since 1996, we’ve watched the rise of instant messaging, digital audio and the MP3 format, file sharing, spyware and antispyware, and the open-source movement, just to name a few. And we’ve watched as online software distribution has gone from pipe dream to reality. These 10 applications best represent the top trends in downloading over the past decade.
ICQ
Today instant messengers are ubiquitous, but when ICQ (”I Seek You”) was first released in 1997, it was truly the first of its kind. Though competitors such as Yahoo Instant Messenger and AIM have since encroached on ICQ’s territory, this chat client remains enormously popular with international users, and it has remained one of Download.com’s most popular applications since its launch. Winamp
Arriving fast on the heels of the emerging MP3 digital format, Nullsoft’s Winamp was one of the darlings of the burgeoning digital audio scene in the late ’90s. This free audio player quickly gained popularity, becoming one of the most popular files on Download.com, and Nullsoft was eventually acquired by AOL in 1999.

Napster
Who doesn’t remember this controversial file-sharing kingpin? Developed by Northeastern University student Shawn Fanning, Napster was a groundbreaking application that enabled users to share MP3s painlessly for the first time through a peer-to-peer network. Napster has since been sued, shuttered, and reborn as a subscription music service, but its legacy remains.

WinZip
When CNET Download.com launched in 1996, WinZip was among the first programs in our library, and in the past nine years, it has remained near the top of our Most Popular list. The reason is simple: For many years, WinZip was an essential utility. You couldn’t download or send large files without it. Even the fact that Windows XP now has built-in ZIP support hasn’t diminished its popularity. The keys to WinZip’s success are its simplicity and its singularity of purpose: it does one thing–compressing and decompressing files–and it does it very well.

iTunes
Apple’s music player and organizer makes our top 10 list for the sheer beauty of its product design. iTunes is not only a full-featured media player and library in its own right, it’s also the gateway for Apple’s iPod and popular music store, creating an elegant and simple interface for buying and organizing music. If only all software were this easy to use.

Ad-aware
Almost as soon as there was software to download, there was adware coming along for the ride. Lavasoft did its part to hold the line with Ad-aware, a spyware scanner and remover. Its simple interface and excellent results have gained the program acclaim over the past five years, including a recent monopoly on the No. 1 slot in Download.com’s Most Popular list. We wouldn’t download files without it, and apparently, neither would most of you.

Skype
If Internet signals can travel over a phone line, then voice calls can travel over the Internet, right? With a Voice-over-IP (VOIP) program such as Skype, they certainly can. The prospect of making free calls to folks all over the globe has persuaded millions of people to install the software; the ease of use and surprising voice quality have earned Skype a loyal user base and accolades that include a CNET Editors’ Choice and a Webby.

RealPlayer
Ten years ago, the Web was full of static content. The 1995 debut of RealPlayer changed all that. Streaming audio and video in a free media player was a bold step forward into making the Internet a viable entertainment platform, and RealNetworks was there. Today the software plays almost every media format, and the online music store sells tunes compatible with most MP3 players–even the iPod. RealPlayer hasn’t always been at the head of the class, but it was there first, and it keeps adapting to the developing world of online media.

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Bridging the gap between print and Internet publishing, Adobe’s portable document format (PDF) lets publishers distribute their articles, newsletters, and documentation online without worrying about formatting problems or unauthorized alterations. By giving away the Acrobat Reader early on, Adobe helped create a nearly unassailable market position. If you want to read magazine archives or software manuals online, you need Acrobat Reader–as its nearly seven-year occupation of the Most Popular list can attest.

New hemorrhagic virus surfaces in Africa
by admin on May.30, 2009, under General info
A lethal, newly identified hemorrhagic virus that killed four of the five people it infected in September and October 2008 has been given the working title of “Lujo”.
Lujo, a member of the arenavirus family, which currently has 22 known species, was named to reflect its geographic origins: the primary case came from the Zambian capital, Lusaka, and secondary infections occurred in Johannesburg after the patient was transferred to the South African city for treatment.
Dr Lucille Blumberg, deputy director of South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases, told IRIN that humans were most frequently infected with this virus by inhaling dust infected with rodent excreta, or ingestion. The name “Lujo” still has to be approved by “various committees” before it becomes official.
The fifth person to be infected with the Lujo virus - a nurse at Morningside Clinic, Johannesburg - survived after being treated with the antiviral drug, ribavirin, usually prescribed for Lassa fever, a hemorrhagic virus first identified in 1969.
Official swine flu figures are just ‘tip of the iceberg’, warn health experts
by admin on May.28, 2009, under General info
Pregnant women and young people most at risk as recorded cases rise to 185
Swine flu is far more widespread than official figures suggest and is causing the severest illness in children, young adults and pregnant women, international evidence shows.
The worrying developments emerged as a 37-year-old man critically ill in hospital in Glasgow was yesterday confirmed as having swine flu, and five members of his family are being viewed as possible cases.
The man, who has not been named, was admitted to intensive care last week and has a serious underlying illness. He is not known to have had contact with any swine flu cases or travelled recently.
The total number of confirmed cases in the UK leapt on Tuesday after an outbreak at Welford Primary School in Handsworth, Birmingham infected 50 children. One further case was reported in the East Midlands yesterday taking the UK total to 185 cases.
In the US, where the official number of cases stands at 6,764, including 10 deaths, experts at the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention say the true total is likely to be 20 times higher, at over 100,000. The official total is the “tip of the iceberg”, they said.
National surveillance systems in the US and Europe depend on family doctors taking swabs from patients who consult them with flu-like symptoms and sending them to the laboratory for analysis, but most patients with flu never see a doctor.
A spokesman for the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the size of the outbreak at Welford Primary School was “not unexpected” and there was “no evidence of sustained transmission in the community at the moment”.
He added: “It is the largest school outbreak so far. But if we get a case in a school we know it will spread. Seasonal flu is no different. We fully expect more cases in the same school.”
Officials accept that if the novel H1N1 virus starts to spread rapidly, the government will be forced to abandon its containment strategy, which involves offering anti-viral drugs prophylactically to close contacts of those infected.
The HPA spokesman said: “We are using [the containment strategy] at the moment. It buys you time to develop a vaccine by delaying the spread. I don’t think anyone assumes you can go on with this indefinitely, but we have not reached that point yet.”
A spokesman for the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Stockholm, which monitors the spread of swine flu across Europe, said: “With any surveillance system there will be cases that are not picked up. The number of laboratory confirmed cases is likely to be lower than the total in the real world.”
“The strategy of containment is being pursued by all countries in Europe but, at some point, that will change. You could paint a very rosy scenario of the whole thing burning out but that is unlikely.”
Over 50 countries have confirmed cases of swine flu totalling 13,394 people, including 95 deaths. Although most of these have suffered mild flu, the virus is putting a number of children, young adults and pregnant women in hospital.
Among 30 patients hospitalised with swine flu in California – with an average age of 27 – half had signs of pneumonia, six were treated in intensive care and four required ventilation. Five were pregnant, two of whom developed complications and spontaneously aborted. Almost two-thirds (19) had an underlying medical condition that may have lowered their immunity.
Experts from the ECDC said although the evidence was preliminary, it showed older people may have some protection against swine flu, which could include elements from flu viruses circulating in the 1960s, to which they may have developed immunity. Younger people, especially those with chronic illnesses or pregnant, may by more susceptible and need priority treatment with anti-virals and vaccination, they said.
Will a more dangerous strain return in autumn? Are we really ready?
Why has swine flu not spread further?
Fewer than 200 people have been identified with the virus in the UK in more than a month; normal flu outbreaks cut a swathe through populations in days or weeks. However, more may have been infected but not felt ill enough to bother their GP – in the US health officials reckon the true total is 20 times the recorded number.
Is it about to take off in the UK?
Unlikely during the warmer summer months. Flu viruses spread more readily in damp, humid conditions and swine flu is expected to return – and spread more widely – in the autumn.
Is it as mild as it looks?
Yes – but this could be deceptive. We know it is a mixture of pig, bird and human viruses in a combination never seen before. It has jumped the species barrier and is spreading from human to human – that alone is disturbing. Even “mild” seasonal flu infects 10 per cent of the population and kills around 4,000 people in the UK per year.
Could it become more dangerous?
Yes – this is what keeps Government chief medical officers awake at nights. The virus is constantly evolving and could mutate into a more aggressive form. This is what happened in the 1918 pandemic and scientists are looking carefully to detect any changes.
Is a pandemic inevitable?
Most experts agree – it is only a matter of time. The critical unanswered question is how bad it will be – both in the number of cases and the severity. A “pandemic” does not automatically imply severe disease. If the virus evades the current strategy of containment, as is likely, and starts to spread, the Government will face a tough challenge explaining why it is withdrawing prophylactic treatment with anti-viral drugs for contacts of infected people.
Swine flu: Country by country
US – 6,764 cases
Mexico – 4,541 cases
Canada – 921 cases
Japan – 360 cases
UK – 185 cases
Spain – 138 cases
Chile – 86 cases
Panama – 76 cases
Australia – 39 cases
Costa Rica – 33 cases
Russia fears Korea conflict could go nuclear
by admin on May.27, 2009, under Conspiracies, UFO's, Unexplained
MOSCOW - Russia is taking security measures as a precaution against the possibility tension over North Korea could escalate into nuclear war, news agencies quoted officials as saying on Wednesday.
Interfax quoted an unnamed security source as saying a stand-off triggered by Pyongyang’s nuclear test on Monday could affect the security of Russia’s far eastern regions, which border North Korea.
”The need has emerged for an appropriate package of precautionary measures,” the source said.
”We are not talking about stepping up military efforts but rather about measures in case a military conflict, perhaps with the use of nuclear weapons, flares up on the Korean Peninsula,” he added. The official did not elaborate further.
North Korea has responded to international condemnation of its nuclear test and a threat of new U.N. sanctions by saying it is no longer bound by an armistice signed with South Korea at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.
Itar-Tass news agency quoted a Russian Foreign Ministry official as saying the “war of nerves” over North Korea should not be allowed to grow into a military conflict, a reference to Pyongyang’s decision to drop out of the armistice deal.
“We assume that a dangerous brinkmanship, a war of nerves, is under way, but it will not grow into a hot war,” the official told Tass. “Restraint is needed.”
The Foreign Ministry often uses statements sourced to unnamed officials, released through official news agencies, to lay down its position on sensitive issues.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has condemned the North Korean tests but his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has warned the international community against hasty decisions.
Russia is a veto-wielding permanent member of the U.N. Security Council which is preparing to discuss the latest stand-off over the peninsula.
In the past, Moscow has been reluctant to support Western calls for sanctions. But Russian officials in the United Nations have said that this time the authority of the international body is at stake.
Medvedev told South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who called him on Wednesday, that Russia was prepared to work with Seoul on a new U.N. Security Council resolution and to revive international talks on the North Korean nuclear issue.
”The heads of state noted that the nuclear test conducted by North Korea on Monday is a direct violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution and impedes international law,” a Kremlin press release said.
Billionaire: Elite Want Two-Thirds Of The “Dumb People” Wiped Off The Planet
by admin on May.27, 2009, under Conspiracies, UFO's, Unexplained
Billionaire entrepreneur Kevin Trudeau, who has been constantly harassed and sued by the FTC for promoting alternative health treatments, told The Alex Jones Show yesterday that elitists and Bilderberg members who he had personally conversed with spoke of their desire to see “two thirds of the dumb people” wiped off the planet.
Trudeau admitted that he was in Greece recently and implied that he attended the Bilderberg Group meeting, while also stating that he personally knew many Bilderberg members who he “conversed with on a regular basis”.
Overpopulation is a primary concern of the elite, and it was the subject of a recent clandestine meeting of billionaire “philanthropists” in New York. Elitists veil their agenda with the humanitarian rhetoric of the need to naturally reduce world population by means of contraception and education, whereas in reality, as we have exhaustively documented, their program has its origins in the inhumane pseudo-science of eugenics which first flourished in Britain, and the ideology of racial and genetic superiority that was later adapted by the Nazis with the aid of Rockefeller funding.
“Some of the conversations you have on the 200 foot yachts off the coast of Monaco - you can’t believe what really goes on behind closed doors,” said Trudeau, noting that Alex Jones had exposed such issues in his documentary films, notably Endgame. The billionaire said that he had recently spent time in Monaco with Crown Prince Albert II.
Trudeau stated that elitists he had talked to thought their plans were for the greater good of humanity but that they believed there were two classes of people on earth, the ruling elite and the “worker bees,” , and that the elite were defined not necessarily by money or power, but by their genetic ancestry.
Trudeau shockingly detailed conversations with elitists during which they brazenly admitted their desire for massive global population reduction.
“I’ve been sitting on the boats off the coast of Barbados with the guys who basically said we need to get two-thirds of the dumb people off the planet - I’ve been in the meetings,” said Trudeau, adding that such words were not spoken in an evil manner, but in a “matter of fact” way under the pretext that such a thing would be for the good of planet earth.
Revealingly, Trudeau said that elitists see Alex Jones as an annoyance but tolerate him because they believe Jones as well as Trudeau himself are, “desensitizing people to these realities,” - which in a way works to their benefit.
“I’ve been told that’s why I still get invited on the yachts,” added Trudeau.
Trudeau aid that the elite was divided into two camps, one larger faction that, “Categorically believes they are genetically superior than the rest of the population,” and another smaller faction, mainly comprising of younger people, that are feeding Trudeau information who, “Have come to the conclusion that some people are smarter than others, some people are more talented than others, some people are more motivated to work….but everyone should be allowed to succeed or fail based on their own choices or initiative….and that’s where there’s a split and a division right now at the highest levels,” said Trudeau.
We would urge people to listen to the full interview with Kevin Trudeau via You Tube , as it is packed with eyebrow-raising information about the mind set of the elite and their future agenda, particularly in relation to the economy. Madeleine McCann: Kidnapper Located
by admin on May.27, 2009, under General info
MADELEINE McCann Watch: Having re-established Our Maddie as a lead news story, the Daily Express delivers a front-page headline to match anything that has passed as news before:
MADDIE: ‘SNATCHER’ LIVES ONLY 500 YARDS FROM THE FLAT
Nick Fagge and Martin Evans deliver the killer facts. Not only was Madeleine McCann “SNATCHED” – Fact! – but the SNATCHER lives – not lived; lives! – a short distance from the McCanns’ holiday flat.
How hard can it be to find the sicko? Now read on:
The key to solving Madeleine McCann’s disappearance may lie within 500 yards of her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, investigators believe.
May. Believe. Facts. And which investigators?
The breakthrough comes after a series of new leads received by private detectives working for Kate and Gerry McCann.
What breakthrough? The tunnels?
And what about Raymond Hewlett, - yet to be interviewed by the McCanns posse? The man who on the word of tourists caused the Mail to label him “Maddie’s Paedo”?
The hunt for the missing youngster has dramatically switched back to Portugal, where investigators last night said they were focusing their probe on a predatory paedophile still living in the area.
What’s their name, then? Scarface? Moon Man? If the name is that of a known paedo, they must have been convicted. So what’s their name? We know Hewlett’s name, so why not this peado’s?
A source close to the investigation said: “All the evidence points to Praia da Luz, not Morocco or Spain or elsewhere. We think the answer to Madeleine’s disappearance lies within 500 yards of the holiday apartment.”
What evidence? Armchair detectives demand more.
They say there is no evidence that a vehicle was used in the abduction, shortly before her fourth birthday, or that she was spirited away out to sea.
What evidence? Well, no evidence of that. Shall we look at some more “no evidence”?
The source said: “Of the four new leads, there is one we are particularly interested in.”
Raymond Hewlett, who says he is innocent?
The detectives identified a suspicious man who was in Praia da Luz at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance and is still living there.
No. Not Raymond Hewlett. No morphine-laced confession from cancer patient Hewlett. So someone else.
The source said: “He is one of a handful of men we are looking at. There are a couple in Praia da Luz and two elsewhere on the Algarve. All but one are British.”
Adding:
The source said: “We are looking at a man. He is of significant interest.”
Yes, looking for a man. Wasn’t that what the Metodo 3 were doing? Although - and get this – aren’t we all looking for a little girl?
Former British police detectives David Edgar and Arthur Cowley recently returned from the Algarve and Germany after interviewing a series of witnesses.
Any news?
Edgar and Cowley were hired by the McCanns to pick up the pieces of the investigation after Spanish agency Metodo 3 failed to find the missing youngster, now aged six.
Edgar and Cowley are The Professionals.
Ex-Detective Inspector Dave Edgar said: “The only people capable of running an investigation like this are those trained as an SIO – Senior Investigating Officer.”
It’s all a matter of rank. If only the McCanns could get or afford a retired Chief Superintendent. Is Ian Blair free?
Edgar and his colleague, ex-Detective Sergeant Arthur Cowley, receive up to 200 inquiries every day from people claiming to have new evidence.
And they check every caller? Is that possible? Can every lead be followed up? What about hoaxers and loons and those who just want to be involved?
An anonymous tip-off/ hunch should be followed up?
Remember the letter to a Dutch newspaper? And a map showing where her body can be found? It was credible. And what about her, she who saw Our Maddie in Morocco? And the “hoax“? And this hoax? And tabloid journalists pointing the finger at innocent men?
A source close to the investigation said: “There are 38 known sex offenders in the Algarve. There have been seven sexual assaults involving the children of tourists in the Praia da Luz area in the past four years. They all have the same modus operandi as Madeleine’s abduction.
“There were attacks on children involving burgling a property and indecent assaults on the kids. Five happened before Madeleine’s abduction, two happened afterwards. One took place a month before Madeleine vanished.”
Was the McCanns’ flat robbed? Were any of the other children molested?
Madeleine McCann is missing – and the speculation remains rife…
Sexual chemistry found in genes causes ‘opposites to attract’
by admin on May.25, 2009, under General info
It seems that opposites really do attract - as scientists discover sexual chemistry is gene based as humans seek out lovers with contrasting DNA.
Scientists have shown humans are programmed to seek out lovers with different DNA to make stronger babies.
A study of ninety married couples found key differences in their immune systems called the ‘major histocompatibility complex’ (MHC).
The MHC is a large genetic region situated on chromosome 6 and found in most vertebrates.
It plays an important role in the immune system and also in reproductive success.
Apart from being a large region, it is also a diverse one.
People with diverse regions of the human genome were more likely to choose each other as mates than those whose MHCs were similar, the study found.
The research found that clues to the make up of a person’s MHC are revealed in sweat.
The researchers, who will present their findings at the European Society of Human Genetics on Monday, said this was likely to be an evolutionary strategy to ensure healthy offspring.
Professor Maria da Graca Bicalho, of the University of Parana, Brazil, said: “Although it may be tempting to think that humans choose their partners because of their similarities, our research has shown clearly that it is differences that make for successful reproduction and that the subconscious drive to have healthy children is important when choosing a mate.”
“We believe our research shows that this has an important role to play in ensuring healthy reproduction, by helping to ensure that children are born with a strong immune system better able to cope with infection.”
With more MHC variations the immune system can recognise a broader range of foreign invaders.
They counted the number of MHC dissimilarities among their couples and then compared them with a group of 152 randomly selected “virtual couples”.
Within MHC-dissimilar couples the partners will be genetically different.
Such a pattern of mate choice decreases the danger of mating among relatives and increases the genetic variability of offspring, the study found.
The researchers said genetic variability was known to be an advantage for offspring.
The MHC effect could be an evolutionary strategy underlying incest avoidance in humans and also improving the efficiency of the immune system.
The scientists believe their findings will help understanding of conception, fertility, and gestational failures.
Research has already shown that couples with similar MHC genes had longer intervals between births, which could imply early, unperceived miscarriages.
